These courses are designed for persons employed or seeking employment in Forest Growing and Management. 
The courses are aligned with the National Industry Competency Standards for the Forest Growing and Management Sector of the Forest Industries.

The Timber Harvesting Regulations 2000 require anyone engaged in commercial timber harvesting in Victoria’s State Forests to hold a Timber Harvesting Operators Licence.              THOL Requirements Summary

The Licence is issued by the Department of Sustainability & Environment after compliance with the following three conditions:

1.       Attendance at an Environmental Care Regulations for Forest Operations Course
(based on the code of Forest Practices for Timber Production)

2.       Attendance at an Occupational Health & Safety for Forest Workers Course
(based on the O.H. & S. Act, 2004 and the Code of Practice for Safety in Forest Operations).

 
3.       Attainment of a Qualification for the type of Forest Work to be undertaken.
For most forest workers the initial qualification required will relate to the use of a chainsaw for crosscutting or for tree felling.
Two types of courses are available as follows
Course in Chainsaw Operation & Maintenance

A course of four days duration which covers chainsaw maintenance, operator safety and working techniques for cutting timber which is already on the ground.

Course in Falling Operations

A course of two weeks duration which covers the additional aspects of chainsaw use related to tree felling in commercial forest operations.
