Description

The course enables participants to grade timber to Australian Standard 3818.2- Railway Track Timbers.

 

Course Content

1.  Timber Imperfections and Characteristics

     . Grain direction and growth ring orientation

     . Knots, borer holes, gum veins, shakes, gum pockets, checks, rot,

     . heart material, want, wane, sapwood, splits, cupping, spring,

       bow and twist.

     . Machining faults and drying defects.

2.  Practical Grading

     . Terminology and relevant standards.

     . Sawing methods

     . Species specific characteristics

     . Assessment against permissible limitations

     . Measuring and Grading

 

Assessment:   Will be by demonstration of skills and answering related questions.
